Higher Ed Re-imagined with WordPress

Being that WordCamp Philly is taking place at a university, we deliberately sought out a session that would be able to emphasize the power of WordPress in an academic arena. Enter Munir Mandviwalla, chairman of Temple University’s Department of Management Information Systems, one of TechRepublic’s top 10 MIS programs in the country. If you’ve rocked a collegiate program in the last ten years or so, you most likely have had experience with Blackboard or another piece of class-based software. You also probably hated it. Over the last few years, Munir has led a valiant charge in the educational realm, re-imagining the core concepts of a Learning Management System with WordPress and BuddyPress – and rebuilding an entire department’s functionality in the process. Is this the future of educational software? Munir breaks it all down for us at WordCamp Philly.

Reed Gustow Joins the Program!

We have a brand new addition to the Springsteen track – Reed Gustow. Many in the Philly web arena probably already know the name well, as Reed has presented at various BarCamps and PodCamps throughout the area and is currently a board member of PANMA, the Philadelphia Area New Media Association. Reed will have a jam-packed presentation focused on creating a customized navigation system for a WordPress-powered blog or web site. Topics to be covered include:

  • How to create pages that cause a desired sidebar to appear – that is, a sidebar with specific links
  • How to create sidebars that display only desired links to pages within the site
  • How to tag pages such that links to those pages can be made to appear in specific sidebars
  • How to create new widgetized sidebars

And don’t forget to check out his bio!

Raphael Mudge Talks Blogging in Plain English

Certain fields are known for dense and unreadable content: engineering, the legal industry, and the government. There is a movement taking place in these fields. It’s called the Plain English movement. Plain English is about producing writing that your audience can digest as easily as possible. Some material is hard, Plain English won’t make quantum physics easier to understand. Still, it removes a barrier to understanding. Have you heard of the WordPress grammar checker, After the Deadline? It started as a Plain English style checker. This talk will cover Plain English, what it means, and how to use a tool like After the Deadline to write better. AtD has many options (all off by default) to help you with Plain English writing. This session will teach you how to get rid of passive voice and hidden verbs. You will learn to connect with your audience through simple writing. If you want to get an early start, visit http://www.plainlanguage.gov to learn more about Plain English. You can get After the Deadline at http://www.afterthedeadline.com. Check out Raphael’s bio on the Speakers page.

A WordPress Wedding

It’s no secret that WordPress is a flexible and powerful platform that can be adapted in a great many number of ways. For Anthony Bubel, this included an RSVP and guest tracking system for his recent wedding that ended up saving a few trees, a whole lot of time, and even money (if you previously had a wedding, I’m sure you will see and appreciate where this is going).  Join Anthony in the Vedder track for a rather unique session, as he explains the theory behind the concept, shows you how it was accomplished, and even demos the project.
