Girard Avenue<\/strong> &#8211; is a new adoption platform for Green Street Rescue. Green Street Rescue (GSR) is a Philadelphia non-profit (501c3). \u00a0We are focused on rescuing stray and homeless cats and practicing TNRM** (Trap, Neuter, Return, Manage) for the feral cats in the city. Rosa&#8217;s is all about buying-it-forward. You can&#8217;t go wrong for $1\/slice and you can throw in an extra buck to buy a slice for someone in need.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"embed-vimeo\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/154885946\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eatcafe.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eat Cafe<\/a> &#8211; 3820 Lancaster Avenue<\/strong> &#8211; is a nonprofit, pay-what-you-can (and pay-it-forward) cafe that nourishes, educates, and unites community in a welcoming environment. The cafe is a collaboration among the center for hunger-free communities and the center for hospitality and sport management at Drexel University, Vetri Community Partnerships and the Greater West Philadelphia community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"embed-vimeo\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/192549340\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h2>If you want to stay nearby<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.williamstreetcommon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William Street Common<\/a> \u2013 Gastropub \u2013 3900 Chestnut Street (39th and Chestnut)<\/strong> If you suffer from FOMO (fear of missing out) you can go right to the after-party venue and get dinner there. Or just hang out, have drinks and be first in line for appetizers. It\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/FWiPs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a 20 minute walk<\/a> from U of the Sciences to William Street Common. You can also take the #11 or #36 trolley (AKA The Green Line) to 36th and Chestnut, and walk the remaining 3 blocks.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/hipcityveg.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hip City Veg<\/a> \u2013 Vegan \u2013 214 South 40th Street<\/strong> Hip City is vegetarian Heaven! They serve 100 percent plant-based fast food. It is a locally-owned chain with just two locations, and luckily, one is close to the after-party. It is so good!<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.local44beerbar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Local 44<\/a> \u2013 Beer and Food \u2013 4333 Spruce Street (Corner of 44th + Spruce)<\/strong> This one is recommended by my friend who lives in the area. She says they have many vegan and vegetarian options.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.handynasty.net\/ucity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Han Dynasty<\/a> \u2013 Trendy Schezuan Chinese \u2013 3711 Market Street<\/strong> It\u2019s kinda loud and crowded, but people love Han Dynasty. The dishes are heat-rated by number.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.podrestaurant.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pod<\/a> \u2013 Swanky Asian Fusion \u2013 3636 Sansom Street<\/strong> Pod is local restaurateur, Stephen Starr\u2019s, super mod Asian restaurant where you can get fancy cocktails and conveyor belt sushi. I wouldn\u2019t give their food the highest rating in the world, but the place itself is pretty cool.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitedog.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">White Dog Cafe<\/a> \u2013 Localvore American \u2013 3420 Sansom Street<\/strong> Judy Wicks (the person who essentially started the sustainable business movement in Philadelphia) opened this restaurant in 1983. It one of the first sustainable restaurants and forever changed the course of history for triple bottom line businesses in Philly. The food is really good, too.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Baltimore Avenue<\/strong> If you stroll West on Baltimore Ave. from the University of the Sciences you will find urban anarchist hippy co-housing and lots of great places to eat. Check out this article from Philly Eater complete with a handy map \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/philly.eater.com\/maps\/restaurant-rows-the-best-of-baltimore-avenue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Restaurant Rows: The Best of Baltimore Avenue<\/a>. Just a note, going down Baltimore Ave. will take you further away from the after-party.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Easy and Familiar Chain Restaurants<\/strong> In the area surrounding <strong>Hip City<\/strong> (214 South 40th Street) you\u2019ll find familiar chain restaurants like <strong>Chipotle, Qdoba, Ben &amp; Jerry\u2019s<\/strong> etc. mixed in with some local places. If you walk around you\u2019ll find something decent. My favorite is <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ramenbarphilly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ramen Bar<\/a><\/strong> at 4040 Locust Street.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>If you want to venture into Center City<\/h2>\n<p>If you want to stray across the Schuylkill River into Center City, you can hop on a Subway-Surface trolley (the Green Line) or catch a cab. You\u2019ll be late getting back to the after-party, but it wont be too bad if you stay within Center City proper.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/vstreetfood.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">V Street<\/a> \u2013 Vegetarian \u2013 126 South 19th Street<\/strong> Vegan tapas! It\u2019s a great place, but small and they do not take reservations so you\u2019ll probably have a wait.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cafelift.com\/\"><strong>Cafe Lift<\/strong><\/a> <strong>&#8211; American Breakfast &#8211;\u00a0428 N 13th Street\u00a0<\/strong>Fantastic breakfast items, ample proportions, and delicious Rival Bros cappucinos. A must for breakfast lovers. <em>Please <\/em>note:<em> no reservations, your whole party must arrive before they reserve a table for you.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/philadelphia.villagewhiskey.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Village Whisky<\/a> \u2013 Burger bar \u2013 118 South 20th Street<\/strong> Gourmet bar food and lots of cocktails from local restauranteur, Jose Garces.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oysterhousephilly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oyster House<\/a> \u2013 Seafood\/Raw bar \u2013 1516 Sansom Street<\/strong> Arguably the best raw bar in Philly.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.barbuzzo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barbuzzo<\/a> \u2013 Mediterranean \u2013 110 South 13th Street<\/strong> Really delicious, fresh Mediterranean-inspired food. If you want in you\u2019ll need a reservation, because it\u2019s always packed, but you can sometimes grab a spot at the bar. If you can\u2019t get in, there are a ton of other great restaurants on 13th street.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lolitaphilly.com\/\"><strong>Lolita<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>&#8211; <strong>Modern Mexican &#8211; 106 S. 13th Street\u00a0<\/strong>Excellent take on modern Mexican by Marcie Turney and Valarie Safran. Usually requires a reservation and Happy Hour starts at 5pm either outside or at the bar. Fantastic margaritas and Cholula Chicken Tacos. Highly recommend the Cococnut Tres Leche and Mexican Chocolate Icecream, this is a place you do not want to skip dessert!<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/charliewasasinner.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charlie Was a Sinner<\/a> \u2013 Vegan \u2013 131 South 13th Street<\/strong> Charlie Was a Sinner is an amazing vegan cocktail bar owned by the same woman who owns Hip City Veg. If you want to start drinking fancy cocktails early and eat fantastic vegan food go here.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cheunoodlebar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cheu Noodle Bar<\/a> \u2013 Ramen \u2013 255 South 10th Street<\/strong> If you\u2019re my friend on Swarm, you know I check in here all the time. Cheu Noodle is my favorite place to eat in Philly. I\u2019ve eaten a lot of ramen and hands-down this is the best in Philly (my fav is the Miso Ramen). They don\u2019t take reservations and you may have a wait, but it\u2019s worth it.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/littlenonnas.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Little Nonna\u2019s<\/a> \u2013 Italian \u2013 1234 Locust Street<\/strong> Delicious Italian Restaurant in the Gayborhood owned by Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran, the same couple that owns Barbuzzo and a bunch of other restaurants in the area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>If you don\u2019t care if you\u2019re really late to the after-party<\/h2>\n<p>Philly is delicious and if you don\u2019t mind being really late to the after-party you can make the journey to these further away neighborhoods. You can also check out these places if you\u2019re in town before or after WordCamp.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chinatown<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leehowfookphilly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lee How Fook<\/a> \u2013 Chinese \u2013 219 North 11th Street<\/strong> I\u2019ve been going to Lee How Fook with my family since the 80s, and I would dare say it is the best Chinese food in Philly. Get the salt baked squid, the Peking Duck or a vegetarian Buddha Roll.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1491 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/2015.philly.wordcamp.org\/files\/2015\/06\/1530709_1593869564192008_1461256739_n-300x173.jpg\" alt=\"1530709_1593869564192008_1461256739_n\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eatatvietnam.com\/vietnam_restaurant.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vietnam Restaurant<\/a> \u2013 Vietnamese \u2013 221 North 11th Street<\/strong> Right next door to Lee How Fook is Vietnam Restaurant (not Vietnam Palace across the street). The food is delicious and if you want to get your drink on you can get a Flaming Volcano \u2013 it\u2019s like an alcohol trough with real flames in the middle.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dimsumgardenphilly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dim Sum Garden<\/a> \u2013 Dim Sum \u2013 1020 Race Street<\/strong> Two words: soup dumplings.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/nanzhounoodlehouse.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nan Zhou Hand-Drawn Noodle House<\/a> \u2013 Chinese Noodles \u2013 1022 Race Street<\/strong> Noodles are hand-pulled in-house and added to soups and other dishes.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rayscafe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ray\u2019s Cafe &amp; Tea House<\/a> \u2013 Taiwanese \u2013 141 North 9th Street<\/strong> In addition to an amazing selection of coffee and tea, Ray\u2019s also has really great food. Note, they\u2019re only open until 8:30.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/penang-philadelphia\">Penang <\/a>&#8211; Malaysian &#8211;\u00a0117 N 10th St<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rangoonphilly.com\/\">Rangoon<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; Burmese -112 N 9th St\u00a0<\/strong>Perhaps the best Burmese food in the region, great service with amazing food.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Northern Liberties<\/strong><br \/>\nYou can walk around <a href=\"http:\/\/atthepiazza.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Piazza<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitphilly.com\/outdoor-activities\/philadelphia\/liberties-walk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Liberties Walk<\/a> and find a zillion places to eat. The area gets a little overrun with Yo Bros\/Woo Girls at night, but late afternoon\/early evening isn\u2019t too bad. Here are some of my fav NoLibs places to eat.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dmitrisrestaurant.com\/2nd.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">D\u2019mitris<\/a> \u2013 Greek \u2013 944 North 2nd Street<\/strong> D\u2019mitris is one of my favorite restaurants in Philly. Get the grilled octopus or the fried calamari.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cantinadossegundos.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cantina Dos Segundos<\/a> \u2013 Mexican \u2013 931 North 2nd Street<\/strong> The NoLib\u2019s branch of Cantina featuring Mexican inspired food and drinks.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/news.standardtap.com.s86406.gridserver.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Standard Tap<\/a> \u2013 Gastropub \u2013 901 North 2nd Street<\/strong> Good beer and good food.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Fishtown<\/strong><br \/>\nFishtown is the hipster outpost of Philly (and the location of YIKES headquarters). It\u2019s far from West Philly but full of great places to eat.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pizzabrain.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pizza Brain<\/a> \u2013 Pizza \u2013 2313 Frankford Ave<\/strong> Pizza Brain not only has decent pizza, it is also the World\u2019s first Pizza Museum! After you\u2019re done your slice you can go to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlebabysicecream.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Little Baby\u2019s Ice Cream<\/a><\/strong> next door.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/cedarpointbarandkitchen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cedar Point Kitchen<\/a> \u2013 Localvore American \u2013 2370 East Norris Street<\/strong> Really good classic food and a great selection of beer.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.locopez.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Loco Pez<\/a> \u2013 Mexican \u2013 2401 East Norris Street<\/strong> \u2013 Delicious drinks and tacos.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/stock-philly.squarespace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stock<\/a> \u2013 Hipster Pho \u2013 308 East Girard Ave.<\/strong> Tasty Pho and Banh Mi<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kensingtonquarters.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kensington Quarters<\/a> \u2013 Localvore Hipster Restaurant\/Butcher Shop \u2013 1310 Frankford Ave.<\/strong> I\u2019ve never eaten at the restaurant, but I\u2019ve bought meat from the butcher and they are super nice &amp; knowledgeable and everything I\u2019ve gotten from them has been delicious.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Frankford Ave.<\/strong> There are too many places to eat on and around Frankford Ave. to list them all. This article lists most of them \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitphilly.com\/itineraries\/philadelphia\/explore-fishtown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">An Eating and Drinking Tour Through Fishtown<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bottlebareast.com\/\">Bottle Bar East<\/a><\/strong> <strong>&#8211; American &#8211; 1308 Frankford Ave<\/strong> 700+ Beer selection in a unique &#8220;grocery store&#8221; set up. Grab your beer from the reach-in fridge, pop the top, and enjoy! Great pub food and relaxed atmosphere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>East Passyunk Ave<\/strong><br \/>\nEast Passyunk Ave. is wall-to-wall restaurants and local shops. Here are a few.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bingbingdimsum.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bing Bing Dim Dum<\/a> \u2013 Hipster Dim Sum \u2013 1648 East Passyunk Ave.<\/strong> This place is pretty new and the Cheu Noodle Guys\u2019 2nd restaurant. Super fun and tasty dim sum and drinks.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cantinaloscaballitos.com\/main.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cantina los Caballitos<\/a> \u2013 Mexican \u2013 1651 East Passyunk Ave<\/strong> Really good Mexican inspired food and drinks.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.izumiphilly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Izumi<\/a> \u2013 Japanese \u2013 1601 East Passyunk Avenue<\/strong> Pretty good sushi.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/statesidephilly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stateside<\/a> \u2013 Gastropub \u2013 1536 East Passyunk Ave<\/strong> Anthony Bourdain shot some scenes from Stateside for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitphilly.com\/articles\/philadelphia\/anthony-bourdain-in-philadelphia-the-layover\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">his Philly episode of The Layover<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>If you want to schmooze at a fancy restaurant<\/h2>\n<p>Want to take folks out to dinner and impress them? Try one of these places \u2013 and get a reservation ahead of time!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/vedgerestaurant.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vedge<\/a> \u2013 Upscale Vegan \u2013 1221 Locust Street<\/strong> Vedge has repeatedly been named the best gourmet vegan restaurant in the US. Get the tuna tartare, you\u2019ll be dreaming about it for weeks afterward.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zahavrestaurant.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zahav<\/a> \u2013 Israeli \u2013 237 St James Place<\/strong> Amazing food made up of small plates.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.talulasgarden.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Talula\u2019s Garden<\/a> \u2013 Farm-to-Table \u2013 210 West Washington Square<\/strong> Fresh, delicious and a really beautiful space. Talula\u2019s always makes the top restaurant lists in Philly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>If you just want a cheesesteak<\/h2>\n<p>A cheesesteak in Philly is like a latte in Seattle \u2013 almost anywhere you go is going to be pretty decent. But if you want a good, authentic Philly cheesesteak you\u2019ll have to travel a little.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Disclaimer:<\/strong> Cheesesteak reviews are of my opinion and do not represent the views of all WordCamp Philly organizers \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jimssouthstreet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jim\u2019s<\/a> \u2013 4th and South Street<\/strong> Forget Pat\u2019s &amp; Geno\u2019s I think Jim\u2019s steaks are better. There is often a line around the block and South Street at night is a hot drunk mess, but if you want a good cheesesteak go to Jim\u2019s.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tonylukes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tony Luke\u2019s<\/a> \u2013 39 East Oregon Ave<\/strong> Tony Luke\u2019s is the real deal\/deep South Philly cheesesteak experience. You\u2019ll have to journey to middleish-of-nowhere South Philly, but if it\u2019s late at night you could go to next door to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/southbowlphilly\/status\/597849482491985921\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Southbowl\u2019s late-night happy hour<\/a> (10pm-12am, Sunday-Thursday) after you\u2019re done your cheesesteak.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/joessteaks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe\u2019s<\/a> \u2013 1 West Girard Ave. (Frankford &amp; Girard)<\/strong> Since Joe\u2019s opened up just down the street from our office, I\u2019ve been there way too many times. The best part is vegetarians\/vegans\/omnivores can all enjoy food there. You can get a vegan cheesesteak, or a real steak sandwich with vegan cheese or vegan steak with real cheese \u2013 any combination you want and it\u2019s all delicious.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.patskingofsteaks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pat\u2019s\/Geno\u2019s<\/a> \u2013 1237 E. Passyunk Avenue (the intersection of 9th Street, Wharton Street and Passyunk Avenue)<\/strong> If you see Philly cheesesteaks on national TV it\u2019s usually Pat\u2019s and Geno\u2019s \u2013 2 cheesesteak joints right across the street from each other open late into the night. If you want to experience the late-night spectacle that is Pat\u2019s and Geno\u2019s go ahead, but it\u2019s a little touristy and not the greatest cheesesteaks ever. If you do go, go to Pat\u2019s which is the one not lit up like Times Square.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>If you just need decent coffee<\/h2>\n<p>Coffee people, you know what I\u2019m sayin\u2019 \u2014 you don\u2019t just need coffee you need GOOD coffee. My wife and I are coffee people and we know all the great coffee shops.<\/p>\n<p><strong>West Philly<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/hubbubcoffee.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hub Bub Coffee<\/a> \u2013 3736 Spruce Street<\/strong> I can\u2019t vouch for this one, but they serve Stumptown and Reanimator so I imagine it should be decent.
