Making WordCamp Philly as Welcoming as We Can

As organizers of WordCamp Philly, we’re dedicated to making this year’s WordCamp as easy as possible for as many people to attend. We have options for those who would benefit from a getting a hand with this or with that. We’re also working to ensure that our food offerings accommodate every attendee’s dietary requirements.

Here are the steps and systems that are in place (or coming into place) to help ensure that you have the best time possible at WordCamp Philly.

Child Care

We will offer free child care in the day during WordCamp. We are tentatively planning to offer it from 8 am to 5 pm. We’re still working out the details, but this we know for sure: All daycare requests need to be submitted at least six weeks in advance of the WordCamp weekend. Please be sure to let us know your child care needs as early as you can, but no later than September 14, 2018.

Color Communications Badges

We’re delighted to share Color Communications Badges again this year. These color badges are stickers that can be placed on a name badge and will enable people to express their communication preferences quickly and non-verbally. The color communication badges are adapted from the versions popularized by the Autistic Self Advocacy Network. (We will post more about this before too long.)

Captioning

We will provide on-site CART (Communication Access Real-time Translation) services for all major presentation tracks at WordCamp Philly, as we did last year. Again, we’re still in the planning stages, but know that we will at least offer the same level of CART services this year as we provided last year.

ASL and Interpretive Services

We are working to make ASL and other interpretive services available for free on an as-needed basis. Please be sure to tell us about any such needs that you may have at least six weeks in advance of October 27, 2018, or September 14, 2018, so that we can make arrangements.

Snack and Lunch Options

While we’re still working with the catering team at University of the Sciences to determine the menu, we want to make it clear that we will have gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, and more options available. We ask that when you register for your ticket that you let us know your dietary requirements. If we know of your needs, we will be sure to plan for it.

Handicapped Parking

On-site parking is free at University of the Sciences. There are plenty of handicapped parking spaces available in the lots adjacent to the two buildings where WordCamp Philly 2018 will be held.

Public Transportation

University of the Sciences is accessible via public transportation. While we’re working to add updated transport details for 2018, the public transportation options are still posted on the WC Philly 2017 site.

Accessibility and Other Needs

WordCamp Philly is a WordPress-focused conference open to all people. We want all people who want to attend WordCamp Philly to be able to attend. If you have accessibility or other needs that we can help address so that you can attend, please let us know.

Code of Conduct

WordCamp Philly believes our community should be truly open for everyone. We’re committed to providing a friendly, safe and welcoming environment for all, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, religion, preferred operating system, programming language, or text editor. We have a code of conduct –- and we expect everyone attending WordCamp Philly to abide by it.

WordCamp Philly is over. Check out the next edition!
