WordCamp Philly will be back in 2019, and soon we’ll be seeking more great speakers, volunteers and sponsors to create another memorable event for the WordPress community. But first, we’re kicking off our planning with an invitation to each of you to apply for a spot on our organizing team.
Who Can Join the Team?
We’re looking for four or five people from our fantastic greater Philly area WordPress community to help us coordinate WordCamp. You don’t need to be a WordPress guru to be part of the team. Good organizational skills are far more important than technical expertise. Some of the things we’re looking for in an organizer:
- Willingness to show up and participate in the conversation. To begin with, we’ll be meeting online every couple of weeks to make plans, and we continue our conversations via Slack. As we move toward the final weeks before the event, we’ll probably meet every week and engage online daily.
- The ability to complete tasks on time, such as writing a post, sending an email or making a call.
- The commitment to working constructively with others and in compliance with our Code of Conduct.
We’re excited to work with people eager to make WordCamp successful, regardless of — as our Code of Conduct puts it — gender, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, religion, preferred operating system, programming language, or text editor.
What Does the Team Do?
These are just a few of the things team members will be working on through the weekend of the event:
- Setting and following a WordCamp budget and timeline.
- Preparing and updating the WordCamp website with important information and news.
- Recruiting speakers and coordinating speaker involvement and support.
- Recruiting and coordinating volunteer involvement and support.
- Seeking sponsorships from local companies, organizations and people.
- Researching, selecting and procuring conference swag.
- Determining catering menus.
- Designing signage and badges.
- Promoting WordCamp Philly across social media.
- Arranging the After-Party.
- Structuring and organizing activities for Contributor Day.
Generally we have a group lead and a backup for each of the main areas. Most of the team participates in some of the tasks, such as contributing content to the website. Past WordCamp teams have documented most of the tasks, and you’ll have folks to provide insights, advice and assistance when needed.
How Do I Apply?
Send us your application no later than 11:59 pm Friday, April 12. The more detail you provide us, the faster we can review the submissions. The team will look at all the applications to select the best fit. We’ll respond to all the applicants to let them know if they’ve been selected.
