Our theme this year is Philly firsts. We choose just a few that were a surprise to us, but with a city whose history is as rich as Philadelphia&#8217;s, it was hard to choose!<\/p>\n<p>Never heard of a Wapuu?&#8230; you can read all about how Wapuu came about <a href=\"https:\/\/wapuu.jp\/2015\/12\/12\/wapuu-origins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>\u00a0and then promptly fall in love like the rest of us. Originally conceived as a local fundraiser, the annual Girl Scout Cookie sale quickly became a bright spot in the Great Depression and an American cultural tradition.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"clear: both\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3847 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/2018.philadelphia.wordcamp.org\/files\/2018\/10\/wapuu-zoo-217x300.png\" alt=\"Zoo-puu, a Wapuu in a balloon with animal stripes.\" width=\"217\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/philadelphia.wordcamp.org\/2018\/files\/2018\/10\/wapuu-zoo-217x300.png 217w, https:\/\/philadelphia.wordcamp.org\/2018\/files\/2018\/10\/wapuu-zoo-768x1061.png 768w, https:\/\/philadelphia.wordcamp.org\/2018\/files\/2018\/10\/wapuu-zoo-741x1024.png 741w, https:\/\/philadelphia.wordcamp.org\/2018\/files\/2018\/10\/wapuu-zoo.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/>Zoo-puu<\/h2>\n<p>Our very brave Zoo-puu is flying high and proud in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philadelphiazoo.org\/Explore\/Attractions\/6abc-Zooballoon.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zooballoon<\/a> overlooking giraffes, zebras and more of the Zoo\u2019s majestic wildlife at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philadelphia_Zoo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Philadelphia Zoo, <\/a>which\u00a0was the first <em>true<\/em> zoo in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>It opened in 1874\u00a0with varied exhibits containing 200 mammals including buffalo, deer, wolves, foxes, bears, and monkeys, as well as 67 bird species, and 15 reptiles.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the grand tradition of the Philly Wapuu, we\u2019re proud to introduce three new Wapuus.
