WordPress 101 Track: What’s It All About?

The WordPress 101 track aims to enable people very new to WordPress to get their heads about the WordPress basics by walking through the steps of getting a new WordPress website up and running – on their own laptop. For 2017, the WordPress 101 track includes six training sessions, as detailed below:

  1. WordPress Installation and Settings: Installing Local, Installing WordPress, Settings Area
  2. Creating Content in WordPress: Posts and Pages, Media and Comments, Tips and Tricks
  3. Customizing WordPress (Part 1): Choosing and Installing Themes, Widgets and Menus, The Customizer
  4. Customizing WordPress (Part 2): Choosing & Installing Plugins, Pro Plugins/Support, Using Shortcodes
  5. Maintaining WordPress: Updates, Backups, Security
  6. Troubleshooting WordPress: Common WordPress Issues, Basic Fixes and Tips, Finding Professional Support

The WordPress 101 track will take place on Saturday, October 28. The specific times and locations for the sessions are listed on the Schedule page of this website.

About the Instructors

For 2017, the organizers of WordCamp Philly asked leading WordPress instructor Joe Casabona to coordinate the WordPress 101 track. Active in the WordPress community for many years, Joe Casabona offers online courses in WordPress and hosts the hugely popular podcast, How I Built It. Joe put together the curriculum and assembled the instructional team for this year’s WordPress 101 track.

  • Joe Casabona – Joe is a longtime developer who loves teaching , especially people new to the field. In the 90s, he was squarely in the “Friends” camp.
  • Kerch McConlogue – Kerch has been writing code by hand for 16 years and using WordPress since version 1.5. Her passion is helping WordPress novices to understand the basic care and feeding of their own sites and to get past their fears of breaking the internet.
  • Beth Soderberg – Beth is an independent developer and digital communications strategist based out of Washington, DC. She focuses on building thoughtfully architected websites that enable her clients to optimize their online presence while being empowered in managing their content.
  • Christina Strommer – Christina is a small-business owner creating and maintaining WordPress sites. She helps organizations with online communications and media. She’s also the household chef, a music enthusiast, hobbyist photographer, and frequent reader.
  • Matt Ryan – Matt has a WordPress consultancy business offering custom website development and monthly website maintenance. Originally from Baltimore, MD, he now calls Downingtown, PA, home. He is back into development after a long hiatus, having survived for a time as a network project manger and software channel manager.

What You’ll Need to Bring

All of the sessions for this track will be hands on. As such, you’ll want to bring the following materials to make sure you can take the most advantage of the day:

  • A fully charged laptop computer and the power cord; Mac or PC are both acceptable; and
  • A notebook and pen or pencil for taking notes.
