Unveiling the 2018 Wapuus!

In the grand tradition of the Philly Wapuu, we’re proud to introduce three new Wapuus. Our theme this year is Philly firsts. We choose just a few that were a surprise to us, but with a city whose history is as rich as Philadelphia’s, it was hard to choose!

Never heard of a Wapuu?… you can read all about how Wapuu came about here and then promptly fall in love like the rest of us. Read on to see our 2018 creations!

Patriot-puu, a Wapuu with an American flag and fireworks in the background.Patriot-puu

Coming in with bang, our Patriot-puu is holding the original flag by Philly’s own Betsy Ross!

George Washington apparently asked if Betsy could make a flag and Betsy responded: “I do not know, but I will try.” In the background, firework ignite since Philly, of course, was where Independence was first declared and the reason for every 4th of July celebration!

Girlscout-puu, a Wapuu with a green sash and beret and holding a large mint cookie.Girlscout-puu

Nibbling politely on a thin mint cookie, our Girlscout-puu is proud to wear the badges for WP.

Way back in 1934, the Philadelphia Council of the Girl Scouts launched the first commercially-produced Girl Scout Cookie sale. Originally conceived as a local fundraiser, the annual Girl Scout Cookie sale quickly became a bright spot in the Great Depression and an American cultural tradition.

Zoo-puu, a Wapuu in a balloon with animal stripes.Zoo-puu

Our very brave Zoo-puu is flying high and proud in the Zooballoon overlooking giraffes, zebras and more of the Zoo’s majestic wildlife at the Philadelphia Zoo, which was the first true zoo in the United States.

It opened in 1874 with varied exhibits containing 200 mammals including buffalo, deer, wolves, foxes, bears, and monkeys, as well as 67 bird species, and 15 reptiles.
